Assistant Branch Manager
Location: Locust Grove

We are currently accepting applications for an Assistant Branch Manager position at Locust Grove Public Library. Locust Grove is a thriving small town, and the library enjoys a robust network of partnerships with other local agencies and organizations, and an internal culture of creative collaboration and teamwork. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Interacting with patrons and staff to ensure that every library visitor receives quality service.
  • General oversight of library operations.
  • Ability to supervise all aspects of branch operations in the absence of the Branch Manager.
  • Some programming and outreach duties.
  • General reference work and circulation duties, to include assisting patrons with computers, copiers, and other technology, locating materials in the collection, and helping patrons access our digital collections.
  • In cooperation with the Branch Manager and administration, participates in goal setting for the branch and in evaluating outcomes. Communicates branch needs through established channels.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (MLIS preferred).
  • Three or more years of public contact work.
  • Work history showing steadily increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately with minimal supervision.
  • Broad general knowledge of information resources and materials.

A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Open until filled. Hourly (non-exempt) position. Starting rate of pay is $18 to $22 per hour, depending on education and experience. Benefits include generous paid vacation, sick leave, optional medical & dental insurance under State Health Plan, and participation in the Teacher Retirement System of Georgia. Service accrued under TRS is transferrable.

Assistant Director for Public Services

Henry County Library System is a 5-library system that serves a diverse and growing community of 240,000+ in the Southern Crescent area of metropolitan Atlanta. HCLS enjoys a collaborative environment that values innovation, supports professional development, and encourages an appropriate work/life balance. We are accepting applications for the position of Assistant Director for Public Services. This position reports to the Director and participates in the creation and ongoing evaluation of policies and procedures that steer quality public service and support staff morale and wellbeing. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Directly supervising and supporting the five Branch Managers and, by extension, providing support and guidance to branch staff as needed.
Identifying staff training needs; planning and implelenting staff training programs; identifiying appropriate continuing education opportunities from outside providers.
Working in collaboration with the leadership team to establish and continually evaluate procedures for efficient and quality public services.
Participating in continuing education opportunities as assigned, including occasional conference attendance.
Representing the library system at community events and meetings; making presentations to the Library Board, Board of Commissioners, and community groups as needed.
Acting in place of the Director as needed in the Director’s absence.
Collaborating with Marketing, Outreach, and other programming staff to promote and expand library services in the community, and participating in the development of partnerships with other community agencies.
Participating in development of the annual budget, administrative decision-making and goal setting for the system.
Monitoring facilities for needed repairs and communicating maintenance needs to the appropriate agency.
In-county travel is required (frequent) and out of county travel may be required for training, meetings, and conference attendance (occasional). Overnight travel out of the area will usually not exceed one-two occurences per year.
This is an in-person position. Remote work may be approved on occasion, on a case-by-case basis, but being present and engaged is an essential component of this position. Administrative hours are generally Monday-Friday 9:00 t0 5:00, but some flexibility in scheduling is allowed.
Requirements:

MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution.
GA Librarian License Grade 5b or higher, or ability to obtain upon hire.
Five years supervisory or administrative experience in public libraries.
Two years customer service experience in a public library setting.
Ability to work collaboratively with staff at all levels of the organization.
Relevant experience that provides transferrable skills may be considered.
Preferred skills and knowledge:

Basic knowledge of human resources and employment best practices.
Grant-writing experience.
Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.
A proactive approach to problem-solving, and a dedication to identifying and removing barriers to service are a plus.
Position available aproximately April 15, 2024 and is open until filled. Salaried (exempt) position; starting salary $55,000-$60,000 depending on qualifications. Generous paid holidays, vacation and sick leave accrue from date of hire. HCLS participates in the Teacher Retirement System of Georgia (mandatory); TRS service is transferrable. Optional health insurance under State Heath and other flex benefits including dental, vision, legal, and life insurance are available through Georgia Breeze. Young Adult Specialist $12-$14/hour
Location: Cochran, Fortson

Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Branch Manager and in coordination with the Youth Services Coordinator, aids patrons, primarily young adults, youth, and their parents, in finding materials to meet their information and recreation needs. Performs circulation and patron registration tasks. Other duties as required.

Essential Duties
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Assists young adults, youth, and their parents in the use of a computerized catalog, and helps them locate materials desired. Maintains material on the shelves in proper order.
  • Does reference work of considerable difficulty. Assists/instructs children, youth, and their parents in the use of indices, online databases, and other specialized reference tools appropriate to the age level of the patron.
  • Works with Assistant Director for Collection Development in the selection of youth and young adults materials for the facility. May meet with vendors. Develops book lists for purchase.
  • Promotes the Peach Award nominees with a year-long display and ballot box. Promotes Banned Books Week, Teen Week, and other applicable ALA events.
  • Familiar with a wide range of literature for Young Adults, including ALA YALSA awards and lists of recommended titles such as Best Fiction for Young Adults and Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers.
  • Develops, schedules, and presents young adult programming at the incumbent’s “home” branch library.
  • Assists in the use of photocopiers, microform reader-printer, Internet computers, and computer printers.
  • Checks materials in and out to patrons, places holds on materials and receives fines and other monies. Registers patrons for borrower’s cards, and enters such information into the database. (This will also include some work in the adult area of the library.)
  • Helps maintain order in the facility. Answers phone calls and directs such to the proper person.
  • Monitors computer and/or Internet use, checking for Internet waivers as needed.
  • Prepares reports, bibliographies, etc. Maintains statistics of program attendance, computer usage, and reader services for the Branch Manager’s monthly report.
  • Conducts library tours for school groups, scout troops, etc.
  • Participates in Vacation Reading Program, developing local programs, etc.; visits area schools to promote vacation reading.
  • Attends meetings and training as required.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent people/interpersonal skills.
  • Broad general knowledge of information sources and materials.
  • Broad knowledge of young adult literature and programming techniques.
  • Clerical skills with emphasis on accuracy and thoroughness.
  • Basic knowledge of computers and office equipment.

Supervision
Works under the supervision of the Branch Manager. Routine tasks and projects are done with little supervision.

Guidelines
The incumbent will follow the generally accepted principles of young adult, and reference services, aided by regular in-service training. The incumbent must be able to set aside his or her personal biases concerning the information a parent or young adult may request.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: Associate Degree. College graduate preferred

Experience: Three or more years of public contact work with children.

Or any combination of experience and education providing the needed skills, knowledge, and abilities.
